An essay about the original Camp Briar Hills appeared in the April 2004 issue of Virginia Living. In the article, author Henry Atwater begins:

"One fine June morning in 1947, I rode a magic carpet ride from Burlington, North Carolina, to a pastoral, secluded Shangri-La near Brownsburg, Virginia, 14 miles north of Lexington. At age nine, I began a six-week adventure that became one of my richest life experiences. The magic carpet was also known as a 1938 Buick. My parents piloted the Buick from our home in Burlington to Camp Briar Hills, located in the beautiful Allegheny Mountain foothills near Jump Mountain. Now, over 55 years later, I still value the lessons, experiences and positive influences from my two summers at Briar Hills........"
